Pharmaceuticals have only been around since the early nineteen hundreds. Only a little more than 100 years. (Barret, Page, 2019) Herbal Medicine or Plant Medicine is considered one of the oldest forms of medication used around the world. (Lipp, 1996).
As an herbalist myself, I often turn to plants for healing first. However, I would like to note that I also believe there is a place and time in all healing journies for pharmaceuticals.
Herbal Medicine comes in all forms, teas, tinctures, salves, lotion, sprays, essential oils, shrubs, and vinegar. What’s fun is you can add herbs to your cooking for medicinal benefits! Some herbs come in pill form, but you need to be cautious with supplement companies. *Please speak with your provider before consuming supplements via pill form*
Ok, so you’re open to using herbs in your life. Now what? Standing in the store or doing research can be really overwhelming. This is where I, as your herbalist, would come in for you. After a careful assessment of your body system, health history, and current medications, I would be able to come up with a selection of herbs that would best fit your needs.
Being an herbalist means looking at the constitution of the plant such as whether it is a cooling or warming herb among other factors of the herb. I also look at the constitution of the person I am working with to see if it is a fit for the treatment of that health condition. Together, we discuss your ideal method of consuming herbs, for example, in tea or powder form. We will also look to see if a blend of herbs would also be beneficial. Appropriate dosage and frequency are discussed during this time as well.
